MYANMAR EMERGENCY RELIEF OPPORTUNITY

you can help by giving or joining the prayer team today!

DEAR CHURCH FAMILY,
Over the last month our hearts have been burdened by the news coming out of our neighbor to the west, Myanmar. On Feb 1, 2021 the Burmese military launched a widespread crackdown after the national elections turned out to be a landslide against their party. The military’s response led to a national protest movement and was met by more violence and repression. Since April 1, this fighting has spilled into the villages along the Thai-Burma border including conducting indiscriminate airstrikes against many villages in the autonomous northern region. This tragic repression has forced thousands to flee from their homes and hide out in caves and the jungle areas around the Thai-Burma border.

There are now over 30,000 refugees that are in hiding along the border. In the past when violence flared up these refugees would seek refuge in Thailand but because of COVID the Thai government has not allowed them to cross. We cannot convey enough how desperate and urgent the situation is for these people. The immediate needs are rice, salt, and medicine to keep these people alive. Though our heart has always been focused on Thailand, we cannot turn a blind eye to the injustice that is happening just hours from us here in Northern Thailand and feel led by God to respond and respond fast.

We have a very trusted local pastor who has been faithfullydistributing food along the border every day. He has taken up donations from local Thai and Karen churches and they are sending as much food as they can but they are quickly running out of supplies. As it stands now, this pastor is caring for a group of 3,000 men, women, and children. They take trucks of food each day and float it across the river that separates Thailand and Burma. Right now, they only have enough food to feed each person one meal a day (a meager meal of rice with salt only) to stay alive. Their goal is to get to 3 meals a day but they currently don’t have enough. They also need medical supplies to treat those who have been badly injured from the bombings and fires.

We sense this is a “kairos” moment for the Burmese people. The time is now to act, to get involved, to point these people to the love of Jesus that is
never failing and finds them in caves, beside rivers, and in the middle of the forest. We have been grieved to the point of tears as we’ve seen pictures and heard stories of those who are suffering mercilessly at the hands of an evil regime. Please join us in praying for these precious people.

We have calculated that $1 per day feeds 1 person, so our initial goal is to raise $42,000 as quickly as possible, which would be enough to provide 2 weeks worth of food for 3,000 people. We hope to exceed this goal and hopefully be able to help as many people as possible.

During this time we will continue to assess the situation with our contacts and continue to raise money as the need develops to include medicine, tents, and other critical supplies. As I sit here and write this letter I am reminded of the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:34-40 when Jesus tells his disciples how upon his returns he will give out a reward to the righteous saying:
‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

The need is immense but in the midst of the immensity we have an opportunity to join with God and feed those who are hungry, serve those who suffering, and love on those who are overlooked. Would you join with us?

Blessings,

Antioch Team Thailand
